Energy@Stanford & SLAC 2019
Energy@Stanford & SLAC is a multi-day conference for 130 incoming Stanford graduate and professional school students interested in energy. This course will allow you to learn about the depth and breadth of energy research at Stanford, grow your personal cross-campus network, meet Stanford energy faculty, attend in-depth interactive elective classes of your choice, experience a team challenge, and build an interdisciplinary community across campus. Friday, September 13th will feature an optional half-day tour of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. An energy background is not required; students from all schools and departments are encouraged to apply.

This four-and-a-half-day conference offered through the Stanford Graduate Summer Institute (SGSI) is free and open to 130 incoming Stanford graduate and professional school students. Energy Market Competition
We need to put a price on carbon to help fight climate change, but how should we do it? After you participate in Energy@Stanford & SLAC, you will be able to tell us.
This year, students in the program will experience both a carbon tax and a cap-and-trade system while playing the roles of generating companies in an electricity market with a 50% share of renewable energy—exactly what California is aiming for in 2026! As existing fossil fuel power plants retire, you and your team members will decide which new ones—if any—to bring on-line to maintain adequate backup for when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine. You will choose how to operate your portfolios of power plants, and, in the cap-and-trade games, you will trade carbon allowances to cover your CO2 emissions.
The reward at the end is a payout in real dollars according to your team’s financial performance in the game. No matter what your academic discipline is, you will be an energy and environmental market shark by the end of the week!
